Sudan has, except for the period between 1972 and 1983, been in a state of civil war ever since its independence in 1956. War has thus been the central focus of political, economic, and social life throughout the country's recent history. The prolonged conflict has caused the loss of up to two million lives and displaced more than four million people. The war's main consequence has been a devastated country in steep economic decline, which has severely hindered Sudan's capacity to develop as a nation.
