Abstract

Post-conflict peace building is a commonly used phrase in Africa in the first decade of the 21st century. Post-conflict peace building encompasses actions to identify and support structures that will help to strengthen and solidify peace, in order to avoid a relapse into conflict and create the conditions for sustaining peace in wartorn societies. The objective of peace building is to re-build 'failed states' in the hope of preventing the recurrence of conflict. Of necessity, post-conflict reconstruction incorporates wider concerns beyond re-establishing peace and security. It requires a stronger development perspective linking political reconstruction, social reconciliation and economic development.
