Following the signing of the Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement in July 1999, the United Nations Organisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) was established on 30 November 1999. MONUC is headquartered in Kinshasa, with liaison offices in Ethiopia, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Namibia. Given the complexity of conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the mission mandate and strength has gone through a number of revisions and updates through the years. MONUC is the largest and most expensive peacekeeping mission in the world.
