Abstract

Somalia is located on the East Coast of Africa, north of the equator and adjacent to the Arabian Peninsula. It shares borders with Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, and the region is referred to as the Horn of Africa. Somalia's land area is 637 660 km2 and its coastline is the second longest in Africa (2 720km) after South Africa. The northern part of the country is hilly, while the central and southern areas are flat. The Juba and Shabelle rivers flow through the country. Major climatic factors are a year-round hot climate, seasonal monsoon winds, and irregular rainfall with recurring droughts. The country's capital city is Mogadishu and other main towns include Hargeisa, Berbera, Merca, Kismayo, Bosasso, and Baidoa.
