Sudan is situated in the Horn of Africa, bordering the Red Sea between Egypt and Eritrea. With an area of 2 505 819 Km2, the size of Western Europe, Sudan is the largest country in Africa. Geographically, culturally, politically and socially, Sudan straddles a fault line between Africa and the Middle East, a position that makes it highly strategic. While Sudan's climate is tropical, its terrain is generally flat plains, though there are mountains in the far South, North-East and West. The river Nile flows through eastern Sudan from south to north.
