Abstract

All of Africa's regions have been afflicted by political tension, civil unrest or violent conflict. In addition, in the task of resolving existing conflicts, the continent is also confronted with the challenge of promoting post-conflict reconstruction and peace-building. This article assesses the challenges of post-conflict reconstruction (PCR). It will highlight some of the fundamental elements of PCR before examining the policy framework which the African Union (AU) and its programme for economic recovery, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), have developed to address PCR. The AU has the primary responsibility for peace and security on the continent.
