Burundi is a small land-locked country in Central Africa, often referred to as 'the heart of Africa' due to its shape and central location within the continent. It shares borders with Rwanda in the north, Tanzania in the south-east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the west. Burundi's total land area is 27 830 km2. It is separated from the DRC by Lake Tanganyika, and straddles the crest of the Nile-Congo watershed. The source of the Nile River is in southern Burundi.
