Abstract

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) region has made significant strides in the consolidation of democratic practices and institutions. The constitutions of member states enshrine the principles of equal opportunities and full participation of citizens in political processes. In a signed treaty on elections, member states share a common vision of "human rights, democracy and the rule of law" as the guiding principles. In addition, Article 5 of the treaty commits member states "to promote common political values, systems" as well as "consolidate, defend and maintain democracy, peace, security and stability" in the region.
