The decade of the 1990s represents, to all intents and purposes, the age of democratic rebirth in Africa. After decades of authoritarian rule and military dictatorship, several African countries have embraced one form of democratic transition or another. This is understandable given the seemingly irresistible spread of what has been generally referred to as the "third wave" of democratisation due to internal and external pressures.
