Abstract

For the past few years, violence, wars and armed conflicts in Africa have been on the decrease, mainly as a result of significant African and international engagement in conflict resolution on the continent. However, according to the 2010 Global Peace Index (GPI), on a global scale sub-Saharan Africa is the region least at peace, with 12 countries ranking among the lowest 20% of 149 countries measured for the 2010 GPI. The lowest rated African countries - Somalia, Sudan, Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) - even saw deteriorations in their scores compared to the previous year. Botswana was the most peaceful country on the continent ranking 33rd.
