Abstract

The average fee earned by the non-executive chairperson of a JSE-listed company, reporting during 2008, was R786 000. The highest fees paid for this role were around R8,3 million, with these top packages usually dollar-denominated, and hence affected by Rand depreciation. The oldest chairperson of a JSE-listed company is 84 and the youngest is 35, with the average age at 59. Twenty-two percent of chairperson positions are held by Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment directors, and this statistic is then split 91% male and 9% female. Banking Sector chairpersons were the highest earners at an average of R2,5 million, followed by the oil and gas sector where the chairperson average income was just under R2 million.
