Abstract

Adaptability and flexibility have always been key strategic issues for business, and today it is accepted that they have become critical to sustainability and survival. Labour flexibility is probably the most important element to the extent that it ranks high in an assessment of national global competitiveness. The argument for flexibility has emanated mainly from the executive boardrooms and has met with solid resistance from the labour movements. This is unfortunate. Labour flexibility, of which flexible pay is by far the most important component, can be as much a safeguard for individual employees as it is for companies...going beyond the obvious link between the two.
