For many years, South Africa has experienced low levels of entrepreneurship. According to the 2008 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) survey, conducted by the UCT Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, early stage entrepreneurship activity was at a mere 7.8%, while the average for middle to low income countries was 13.2%. Although there are several public and private sector initiatives to address this challenge, the role of a professional accountant has been largely ignored. The shortage of tens of thousands of accountants that could affect the future functioning of the economy, not to mention the success of professional accounting practices, cannot be ignored.
