Abstract

This issue is devoted in part not only to the growing power of small business in South Africa but also to its absolute necessity for the country's long term survival. Perhaps by way of introduction we should reflect on some valuable words from the Finance Minister during a speech at the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The top line: eighty percent of jobs in the country are created by firms employing less than fifty people. The Minister went on to say that addressing the employment challenge facing the country would be difficult without a sustained upward shift in the number of firms operating in the country and the expansion of jobs created in smaller firms.
