BRICS is a powerful group of the world's leading emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The five countries combined account for roughly 25% of global GDP and over 40% of the world population. South Africa was the last country to join the group in December 2010. From 26 to 27 March 2013, South Africa hosted the fifth BRICS Summit at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC). The summit strengthened South Africa's international recognition as a BRICS member and helped leverage its position as a possible gateway into Africa.
