Abstract

The Ugandan threat to withdraw from all United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) peace-keeping operations has certain logic, but threatens the success of years of hard work in some of the very dangerous areas of Africa, such as the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia and the Central African Republic (CAR). Uganda is the official mediator in the conflict between the M23 rebels and the government of the DRC in the North Kivu province of the DRC, and is the main supplier of troops to the AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM). It also contributes to the joint operation against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in the CAR. Is the intention to withdraw from peace operations likely to happen, and what would be the effects?
