Abstract

An attempt to commandeer Egypt's Arab Spring prodemocracy uprising by the imposition of an Islamist fundamentalist vision upon the country from an authoritative-minded new ruling party, was a major development in African matters of conflict and peace as 2012 wheeled into 2013. Followed closely in the news, was France's expulsion of rebels in northern Mali, the continuing instability in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and intimations of trouble when Zimbabweans engage in elections this year.
