Abstract

Africa's economic growth is being fueled by the purchases of a growing middle-class, which has its own needs to sustain, and whose influence is an underreported factor in political movements that have occurred in various African countries since the 1990s. By its fundamental make-up, any middle-class requires stability to thrive. Investments in homes, automobiles, consumer goods, bank accounts and equity portfolios all require a sound and peaceful political environment to thrive, or even exist. Conflict undermines the stability on which middle-class life is based. Warfare wipes out the middle-class lifestyle as surely as it takes actual lives. Corruption, crime and civil discord all make middle-class life a challenge to maintain.
