Abstract

The Seleka rebel coalition in the Central African Republic (CAR), under the leadership of , began its offensive in December 2012. Seleka was able to achieve much success in their conquering of large areas of the impoverished country. Initially, Seleka believed that the government had not honoured peace agreements between 2007 and 2011, which offered support to insurgents who laid down their weapons. Furthermore, the ousting of became a demand that the government refused to acknowledge.
