Abstract

The toll of corruption on economies and societies remains not only a civic problem but a source of conflict and potential conflict. Specific to the West African nation of Liberia, corruption is so pervasive it is practiced openly, without any pretext toward invisibility. Life is lived so in the shadow of corruption that personal, professional and political plans are made to accommodate corruption. Commonplace at every level of Liberian society, this malady is both a cause of poverty and socio-economic imbalance, as well as a barrier to overcoming them.
