Abstract

The Egyptian Sinai, which constitutes all Egyptian territory east of the Suez Canal, has been subjected to increased insecurity and widespread lawlessness since former President Hosni Mubarak departed from power on 11 February 2011. This development was underscored on 11 September 2013 when six Egyptian soldiers were killed and 17 others were wounded by an unidentified jihadist group at a military intelligence building and checkpoint in northern Sinai next to the Raffah crossing along the Gaza border.
