Abstract

Minerals extraction is perhaps the world's least sustainable activity, not only due to negative health and environmental consequences of mining, but also a host of social problems. There are countless examples across Africa of once close-knit communities driven apart by mining, sometimes before extraction has even begun, and the consequences reverberate across generations. Another key social shortcoming is the exclusion or marginalisation of neighbouring communities from the economic prosperity that mining can bring to a country and its elites.
