Abstract

The Somali militant group, al-Shabaab, has garnered worldwide attention for its war to achieve a fundamentalist Islamist state in Somalia and, most recently, its attack on the Westgate Mall in Kenya. However, little emphasis is placed on the group's significant recruitment of non-Somali fighters in East Africa. While al-Shabaab's Western foreign recruits have largely monopolised media attention, the terror group comprises fighters from the Middle East with experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts who are now filling high profile roles from leadership to training the group's members in explosives and suicide-attack techniques. However, al-Shabaab's heaviest foreign fighter recruitment has actually been from countries in East Africa.
