Abstract

Taxes and conflict go hand in hand. Unfair or onerous taxation has led to social upheavals and revolutions. Taxes are known to fund armies and finance warfare. (Many a war is determined by national leaders wondering if their treasuries can afford the expense, and how great a tax burden will be assumed by the populace before they lose enthusiasm for the military adventure.) However, taxation also funds the rebuilding of conflict-torn nations, and if responsibly applied, it can address social ills that may otherwise lead to conflict.
