Abstract

As the Central African Republic (CAR) continues to find itself in the throes of sectarian violence, the election of a new leader has prompted hopes for a way forward from ongoing strife. At the behest of the CAR's Constitutional Court, a vote was conducted by the Transitional National Council on 20 January 2014 following former President Michel Djotodia's resignation on 10 January. Despite allegations of "underhand negotiations" in the two weeks prior to the election, the results of the vote proved a noteworthy surprise.
