Abstract

On 4 January 2014, South African Minster of Defence Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula reassured the international community that South Africa has a responsibility to help stabilise the volatile situation in South Sudan. The minister's remarks followed a request made by the United Nations (UN) to member-states to increase peacekeepers in South Sudan in the wake of ethno-political violence that broke out on 15 December 2013. Mapisa-Nqakula stated that although it would be difficult for South Africa to deploy a requested battalion of 1,000 soldiers, the country would consider contributing other forms of resources.
