Abstract

Amadou Sanogo, the military captain who became the leader of the in Mali in 2012 has been arrested by the new government. Although he is not being tried for the coup itself, he is on trial for kidnapping, and under suspicion of torture and murder. These crimes allegedly occurred during the post- power-consolidating phase, and in particular, during a violent crackdown on a counter- movement. These charges have been afforded particular weight with the recent discovery of mass graves in the town of Diago, near the garrison town of Kati, that allegedly contain the remains of soldiers loyal to ex-President Amadou Toumani Touré. These soldiers were arrested in the aftermath of the failed counter- against the Sanogo.
