Abstract

Sovereign wealth funds (SWF) are fast becoming popular in Africa as the continent seeks innovative ways to manage resource revenues to boost economic growth and credit ratings. SWFs are primarily used to protect resource revenues to ease the impact of commodity price volatilities. However, West African countries are also looking to SWFs as an escape from the so-called resource curse in a region where discoveries of valuable commodities ignite conflict and corruption instead of funding development. Severe risks come with SWFs, including risks emanating from managerial ineptitude of SWFs, political problems and civil unrests in most resource rich countries. These risks have proved a hindrance to the success of SWFs in West Africa.
