Abstract

It is axiomatic that a name need not necessarily reflect reality. The Arab Republic of Egypt is officially a democracy, although a democratic system of governance is in abeyance. An attempt to commandeer Egypt's Arab Spring pro-democracy uprising by the imposition of an Islamist fundamentalist vision upon the country by the Muslim Brotherhood led to a military takeover that postponed Egyptians' democratic aspirations in 2013. For how long the military leadership can continue its authoritarian hold on a rebellious population and against international condemnation will likely be answered in 2014 - an election is scheduled. If the balloting is legitimate, democracy has a chance.
