Abstract

Northern Africa's area of greatest instability is not one of the post-Arab Spring countries struggling with their new democratic dispensations, but an older conflict that has long festered between Morocco and Western Sahara, the vast desert territory that lies along its southern border that aspires to independent statehood. The situation pitting Morocco against Western Sahara, at times in bouts of violent warfare, can be described as either an 'overlooked conflict' or a 'forgotten conflict'. The imbroglio is a matter that regional organisations, UN and Western powers would prefer not to address.
