Abstract

South Sudan's oil wealth has prompted concerted international efforts to end the latest civil war, begun in December 2013. The conflict has been abetted by Sudan, from which South Sudan separated in 2011 to become the world's youngest country. Sudan requires its former territory's oil deposits to fuel its refineries, but a political dispute between the nations caused South Sudan to shut off the pipeline in 2012. This action had the unintended effect of tarnishing South Sudan's reputation as an investment destination. Political rivalry should not interfere with ensuring a sound business environment.
