Abstract

Niger suffered a significant attack on 25 April 2015, when attacked an army base on Lake Chad, killing at least 50 Nigerien soldiers. Boko Haram fighters are believed to be hiding on some of the lake's many islands and using motorboats to make incursions into Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon. An estimated 150,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing from Boko Haram face a risk of food shortage, the Minister for Agriculture said on 18 April. Niger's north-east border with Libya has seen increased insecurity since that country was fragmented by civil war. On 17 April, France's Ministry of Defence published images showing French paratroopers dropping into this border zone to conduct counter-terror operations against groups, including al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). However, the Boko Haram incursions are limited in scale and location, and the Nigerien economy is absorbing the disruptions and shouldering on.
