Abstract

The economic situation in the Central African Republic (CAR), despite a slowdown of major fighting between the interim government and rebels, has not improved. The planned 2015 elections have already been pushed back twice and the interim government has only erratic control outside of the capital, Bangui. Within the capital, the killing of a UN peacekeeper in an ambush on 2 August testified to porous security that has undermined business confidence that has never recovered from the coup d'état of 2012 that sparked a still-unresolved civil war.
