Abstract

Intended to intimidate and dehumanise enemies, the display of decapitated heads has been a staple in warfare since the dawn of human aggression and is lustily practiced by African militant groups today. If there is any good to come from beheadings today, it is their continuing ability to shock and to convert revulsion into action against the perpetrators.
