Abstract

South Africa is undoubtedly the most advanced economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, but this privileged status is encountering a series of political setbacks that undermine development progress, challenge the Rule of Law and unsettle social cohesion. Amidst an upsurge in xenophobic attacks against migrant workers in early 2015, strained labour relations and tensions between state institutions, allegations of corruption from the president on down, and the country's championing of Sudan's indicted war criminal Omar al-Bashir all seemed to get in the way of effective action on high unemployment and ruinous economic inequality during the first half of 2015.
