Abstract

Guinea-Bissau's brief period of relative political stability was, in August, dramatically upset by a three-cornered battle between President José Mário Vaz, Prime Minister Domingos Pereira and a Supreme Court ruling. The appointment of a new prime minister (PM) in September brought only a brief reprieve as tension flared again between the president and PM within the first week of October. The political crisis threatens to undermine the ruling party and endanger the already fragile economy. Further military interference in the country's politics may yet be sparked.
