Abstract

Obscured by impressive economic performance over the past decade is the fact that Ethiopia remains a de facto one-party state maintained though state-sanctioned abuses and curbs on press freedom. Relative to its war-torn neighbours, Ethiopia's stability may be reassuring to investors but is based on oppressive rule, human rights violations and the forced displacement of local communities - a combination certain to foment popular unrest if the economy falters.
