Abstract

Conflict has been almost non-existent in Botswana since the country's independence in 1966, as the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been able to manage the country's bounty of mineral wealth as a means to sustain and diversify the economy. However, a decrease in price for diamonds and a collapse in the price of other commodities like nickel and copper, as well as sensitive issues surrounding indigenous land rights, represent challenges for the BDP going forward.
