Abstract

A petro-state controlled by the iron fist of President Teodoro Obiang, Equatorial Guinea has become one of the most corrupt states in the world, with little regard for human rights, political freedoms or providing economic opportunity for citizens. Throughout his tenure, President Obiang has been able to survive multiple attempted coups d'état and to suppress domestic conflict, although a three-year economic recession and depressed oil prices are raising the potential for unrest.
