Abstract

African nations follow individual trajectories of development; some are politically advanced, with stable democratic systems and working economies, while others are in conflict, under the rule of despots or plagued by insurgencies, teetering on the downward slope leading to 'failed state' status. In ACM's August 2015 report, Alexandre Marc, a World Bank expert in the causes and dynamics of fragile states in Africa, discussed internal and external ways in which to strengthen politically insecure nations. The conclusion of this interview investigates cultural, demographic and financial factors affecting poorly performing nations in West Africa and elsewhere on the continent.
