Abstract

Insurgencies are being pursued throughout Africa by regional and international forces; but the asymmetric warfare that insurgent operatives and fighters practice allows them to carry out unexpected terror attacks, seemingly at will. Islamic fundamentalists are the most active militant insurgencies north of the equator, terrorising populations in North, East and West Africa, while guerrilla groups seize territory for financial and political gain in Central Africa; and Mozambique's opposition party has rebooted its guerrilla campaign against the government in an unsettling setback for Southern Africa's stability.
