Unisa's law faculty may be said to have been born in stages. As in a sense is the case with all our universities founded before 1952, its ""conception"" may be traced back to the University of the Cape of Good Hope which was incorporated in 1873 in order to replace the Board of Public Examiners. The Board had hitherto, since 1858, supervised the examinations for the First and Second Class Certificates in Law and Jurisprudence, the first and only recognised legal qualifications in the country.
