Abstract

It should be general knowledge by now that correctional supervision, being a ""community-based punishment"" (s 1 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 hereafter called ""the Act""), is executed within the community. Control over an offender sentenced to correctional supervision (the ""probationer"") is limited to that which can be achieved through monitoring the probationer's adherence to the conditions of the sentence. These conditions include measures such as house arrest, community service and the attendance of various lectures and courses.
