Abstract

Finance is one of the core elements in fuelling the growth, development and competitiveness in many national systems of innovation. Increasingly, both domestic and external sources of finance are important for development and competitiveness not only in the industrialised countries but also in emerging and transitional economies. However, for most developing and least developed countries international finance leveraged through official development assistance are very significant for financing science, technology and innovation capacity development. Also, multinational corporations and private non-profit organisations have become important sources of finance for research and innovation activities across many countries.
