The small, medium and micro enterprise (SMMEs) sector is recognised as key to the fostering of private sector development and the attainment of sustainable economic development and, through it, the achievement of employment creation and poverty alleviation in developing economies, including Africa. In this regard, accent on SMMEs is compatible with and fully supportive of the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that among other objectives targets the halving of poverty by 2015. For this reason, regional development and integration plans of various regional economic communities' (RECs) recognise the significance of this sector. In the case of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) this is highlighted in its Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP).
