Abstract

2010 was a difficult year for SMME managers and owners in South Africa. A significant number of them went into receivership as a result of the global financial meltdown. The year, however, ended on a sombre note with business confidence in the sector still very low and fragile. The spirit-lifting highlight of the year was the 2010 National SMME Conference and Awards which took place at Birchwood Hotel, Johannesburg, on the 21st October. Khayelitsha Cookies, a small business based in Cape Town was crowned as the overall SMME of the Year.
