The idea for Guiding Hope came about in 2006. A few of us had conducted a market study a year earlier and found that vast amounts of honey were produced in Cameroon, but beekeepers were geographically isolated and had very little access to market opportunities. We also found that honey and beeswax in the area were undervalued, and through a bit of technical assistance, producers could increase product quality and fetch higher prices. By organizing bee farmers and bringing their products to market, we saw an opportunity to help develop the apiculture sector and, ultimately, to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people. In 2007, we became legally registered as a Common Initiative Group (CIG), a form of small enterprise in Cameroon. We created our mission statement - to develop environmentally and socially responsible, fair yet profitable trade of apiculture products - which has guided us in our activities ever since.
