Abstract

More than 50 years since a significant number of African countries gained independence from their colonial masters, most African countries still fail the most basic development tests. The continent is the least developed in the world with most African countries languishing at the bottom of the world development league. The continent is behind in a number of global development indices including human development index. The lack of development in Africa can be mostly attributed to the low priority attached to development by the continent's leaders. The post independent leaders of the continent attached great significance to education and economic development.
