Abstract

In spite of South Africa's efforts in creating a suitable environment for survival of microenterprises, they are still struggling. One of the reasons is that many South African townships reflect both first and third world features. Thus, microenterprise support, in particular microfinance, becomes a challenge. On the other hand, many South African townships, especially in Gauteng, already offer the necessary infrastructure and environment, and on regional as well as on national level there exist institutions and programmes which can be adapted and developed to provide more support for sustainable microenterprise development.
