Abstract

Dr Kwame Nkrumah, once said that the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is liked up with the total liberation of Africa. The good Doctor made this statement on March 6, 1957 during Ghana's independence celebration more than fifty years ago. During that time, the entire continent, except a small number of countries, was under colonial rule. Sadly, Nkrumah statement was valid then and is still valid now. The truth of the matter, however, is that Africa, since Nkrumah's pronouncement, has never been free economically or even politically. Economically, most African countries still depend on foreign aid from Europe and the US. Politically, Europe and the US have always intervened in Africa's affairs when their economic or military interests are under threat.
